DNTL X400 - Dental Care for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Community Provider Training Program
This certificate program will present academic content and provide clinical practice in the utilization of psychological and behavioral skills and supports to effectively treat individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in dental clinic. It will also provide instruction including social determinants of health, informed consent, guardianship, medical stabilization, behavioral management, practice management, and health assessment when treating and communicating with individuals with IDD and their support network.
The program will include live and videotaped lectures from several interdisciplinary professionals from The Ohio State University Nisonger Center and field experts from across the country, computer generated simulation trainings, and direct on-site clinical care of dental patients at OSU Nisonger Center McCampbell Hall.
Delivery Options
Hybrid: A course or program that blends in-person sessions at a designated location with online instruction. You will engage with your instructor and classmates both face-to-face and through virtual activities, which may include lectures, discussions, and assignments. The online portion can be delivered virtually in real time or at your own pace. See the course page for more details.
Program Schedule
This program is delivered to cohorts of community provider dental teams over three days at OSU Nisonger Center McCampbell Hall. It features a comprehensive blend of didactic sessions, clinical practicums, self-study materials, and online simulations, providing a well-rounded training experience.
Time to Completion
Certificate candidates will attend 24 hours of onsite training and complete six hours of online activities for 30 hours of credit.
Qualifications
- Participating dental teams must include at least one licensed provider (e.g., dentist, dental hygienist) for support personnel (e.g., dental assistants, office managers, front desk personnel) to enroll
- Enrollees must be approved by the Delta Dental Foundation
Course Completion Requirements
- Certificate candidates must receive a passing score of 75% or greater on post session evaluations (6).
- Certificate candidates must successfully demonstrate a 75% of greater clinical competency during simulations of effective IDD and family communication, behavior management, and medical stabilization techniques as assessed by supervising instructors.

What You'll Learn
- Identify chronic sorrow and the stage of grieving that a parent or caregiver of an individual with IDD may experience during an oral health care appointment, as well as health and well-being indicators through social determinants of health.
- Identify and define various cognitive diagnoses associated with individuals diagnosed with an intellectual disability.
- Demonstrate appropriate language level and communication techniques in treating patients with IDD during dental care appointments.
- Complete assessments for cardiac, respiratory, neural, and sensory functions to identify possible patient safety concerns and navigate supported decision making, informed consent, and guardianship issues.
- Understand legal precedents and documentation requirements for medical stabilization and demonstrate knowledge of nonpharmacological behavior management from least restrictive to most restrictive.
- Demonstrate understanding of sedation levels, including the safe use of anxiolytics and the 3x5 Sedation Assessment to determine sedation needs for patients with IDD.
- Assess clinical environments, scheduling, and staffing effects on patient behavior and adopt treatment modifications and techniques to improve oral health care outcomes for patients with IDD.

Additional Information
This program is funded by the Delta Dental Foundation of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina. Travel expenses will be supported by the foundation and will require participants to contact the foundation to arrange for travel reimbursement.
