This interactive course is intended to equip 988 call line professionals with the tools and skills needed to identify and respond to victims of trafficking. Attendees will examine case studies, participate in interactive polls and hear from subject matter experts. The course will help attendees recognize signs of trafficking, understand dynamics of exploitative relationships, build empathy with individuals who may be experiencing a trafficking situation, and identify available resources to support people who have been trafficked.

  • Explain the dynamics of exploitation and how trafficking occurs within relationships.
  • Review a potential case of human trafficking and differentiate cases of exploitation and abuse versus human trafficking.
  • Describe how to utilize trauma-informed language when speaking with a caller with potential experience of being trafficked.
  • Identify local and state resources to enhance their response to human trafficking.

What You’ll Earn

  • Social workers completing this training will receive 2 clinical continuing education clock hours under ACE.
  • This training is approved for 2 CE clock hours for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists, as well as prevention professionals in domain PR1 – prevention field related (renewals only) and substance use counselors in domain TR1 – treatment field related (renewals only) in the state of Ohio.

Anti-Human Trafficking Program Specialist, Ohio Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Services

Veronica Scherbauer is an anti-human trafficking program specialist for the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Services. She works with state agencies to develop policies and protocols to fight human trafficking, provides technical assistance to local organizations and groups serving survivors of trafficking and creates training materials and curriculum for a variety of professional groups and community organizations wanting to learn about human trafficking.

Kelli Cary, MSSA, LISW-S
State Anti-Trafficking Director, Ohio Department of Public Safety

Kelli Cary, MSSA, LISW-S, has been a leader in the anti-trafficking space for over a decade. As a licensed independent social worker, her experience working with survivors in clinical and advocacy settings fuels her passion for this work. Cary is currently the state anti-trafficking director at the Ohio Department of Public Safety, managing the Governor’s Human Trafficking Task Force, where she leads Ohio’s statewide response to human trafficking. Previously, she held executive positions in anti-trafficking nonprofits, where she developed and supervised programs providing direct services to adult and minor survivors of human trafficking. In these roles, she led multidisciplinary teams, coalitions, policy efforts and statewide working groups with the belief that collaboration at the local, state and national level is how to effectively combat human trafficking. Cary also serves on the steering committee for the National Compendium of State-Run Anti-Trafficking Initiatives and is passionate about developing trauma-informed programs, standards of care and policies that prioritize survivor voices to ensure that services are truly restorative.

Continuing Education Approvals

The Ohio State University College of Social Work (Provider: 1628) is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The Ohio State College of Social Work maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 4/30/25–4/30/28. Social workers completing this course receive 2 clinical continuing education credits.

The Ohio State University College of Social Work provides approvals for continuing education for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists that are accepted by the state of Ohio Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board.

Certificates & CE reporting:

CE certificates will be available for download in your learner portal within 1 business day after submitting the evaluation survey. Hours for those with Ohio licenses that are submitted with the evaluation survey will be reported to CE Broker every 14 days (twice per month).

⚠️ Note: You may only complete this training once for CE credit. You may revisit the content, but only one certificate will be issued and credit will only be reported to CE Broker one time.
