Working with trauma survivors often means working with individuals with substance use and mental health concerns. This self-paced training focuses on how trauma can cause or increase the use of substances and how substance use coercion can impact treatment and healing. This training also explores how to focus callers who are under the influence and empower a recovery mindset. Finally, the training also discusses safety planning with callers who are actively using substances, as well as Motivational Interviewing concepts and techniques to use on a crisis line.

What You'll Earn

This training is approved for 2.25 CE clock hours for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists, as well as substance use counselors in domain C2 - counseling procedures and strategies as applied to those with substance use disorder in the state of Ohio.

Cheryl Stahl, LPCC-S

Substance Use/Mental Health Program Director, Ohio Domestic Violence Network

Cheryl Stahl, LPCC-S, is ODVN's substance use/mental health program director. Stahl assists staff in domestic violence programs with how to best serve survivors with substance use and mental health concerns. She is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of Ohio and began her career volunteering on a crisis line at Townhall II in Portage County. She went on to work as a victim advocate, prevention educator, crisis line volunteer training coordinator and finally as a counselor in outpatient services. Stahl has worked in both an outpatient setting and, prior to joining ODVN, as the program manager for the Portage Area Recovery Center (PARC), a program of Family & Community Services, Inc. She has a great passion for working with the substance using/dependent population and continues to work to reduce the stigma associated with addiction and mental health. Stahl earned her bachelor's degree in psychology with minors in Philosophy and Criminal Justice, and her Master of Education Degree in Community Counseling at Kent State University. 

Continuing Education Approvals 

The Ohio State University College of Social Work provides approvals for continuing education for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists that are accepted by the state of Ohio Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board.

The Ohio State University College of Social Work has been approved by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals (CDP) Board as a provider of Continuing Education, approval number: 50-24068.

Certificates & CE Reporting 

CE certificates will be available for download in your learner portal within 1 business day after submitting the evaluation survey.

Hours for those with Ohio licenses that are submitted with the evaluation survey will be reported to CE Broker every 14 days (twice per month). 

⚠️ Note: You may only complete this training once for CE credit. You may revisit the content, but only one certificate will be issued and credit will only be reported to CE Broker one time.
