CRMGTPV X025 - Understanding and Managing Empathy-Based Stress Reactions When Working with Clients Experiencing Suicidality
In this training, participants will learn fundamental information about suicide and suicide management as it relates to empathy-based stress reactions among mental health workers. Participants will receive information about stress, burnout and other empathy-based stress reactions. The training addresses risk factors for these common reactions, as well as prevention and intervention at both the individual and organizational levels. Participants will leave the training with specific information related to empathy-based stress reaction prevention and intervention that they can implement within their own professional practices.
Delivery Options
This training is constructed as a non-interactive, video-based asynchronous distance learning training.
Time to Completion
Total Asynchronous Time is approximately 3 hours.
Training Completion Requirements
- Participants must submit a pre-training survey, complete all coursework requirements, and pass the training post-test with a score of at least 80%. Unlimited attempts are allowed.
- The post-training evaluation survey will be immediately available once the required coursework and post-test are finished, and the evaluation must be completed to receive CE credit.

Julia Whisenhunt, PhD, LPC, NCC, CPCS
Professor of Counselor Education in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Speech-Language Pathology, University of West Georgia
Julia "Julie" Whisenhunt, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, CPCS is a professor of counselor education in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Speech-Language Pathology at the University of West Georgia (UWG). She is the director of the Ed.D. program in Professional Counseling and Supervision at UWG. Whisenhunt earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Practice (CACREP accredited) from Georgia State University. She holds licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Georgia, and she is also a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Certified Professional Counseling Supervisor (CPCS) in Georgia. She is trained as an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) facilitator and is a Disaster Mental Health Volunteer. Whisenhunt has instructed psychology and counseling courses since 2004. She specializes in the areas of crisis intervention, suicide and self-injury. She coauthored the Crisis Intervention Ethics Casebook, which was published by the American Counseling Association, and the 9th edition to Crisis Intervention Strategies, which was published by Cengage. Whisenhunt remains active in her professional field through membership and service to various professional organizations, such as Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International, the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling and the Association for Humanistic Counseling.
Continuing Education Approvals
The Ohio State University College of Social Work provides approvals for continuing education for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists that are accepted by the state of Ohio Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board.
The Ohio State University College of Social Work has been approved by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals (CDP) Board as a provider of Continuing Education, approval number: 50-24068.
Certificates & CE Reporting
CE certificates will be available for download in your learner portal within 1 business day after submitting the evaluation survey.
Hours for those with Ohio licenses that are submitted with the evaluation survey will be reported to CE Broker every 14 days (twice per month).
⚠️ Note: You may only complete this training once for CE credit. You may revisit the content, but only one certificate will be issued and credit will only be reported to CE Broker one time.
