CLNTEACH X212 - FD4ME - Mentoring 4: Essentials of Promotion and Tenure for Mentoring

Promotion and tenure remain two of the most sought after goals among physicians and scientists in academic medicine. However, given the focus of academic institutions on achieving the "tripartite mission" of clinical care, scholarship, and education—and the increasing number of specialty tracks—navigating the process of promotion can be a daunting task for the junior faculty member.
Despite formal education and access to online written guidelines, junior faculty are often left with questions such as:
- "What are the expectations for promotion on my track?"
- "When should I think about promotion and who can tell me if I am ready?"
- "Am I on the right track?"
In this module, we present an overview of promotion and tenure including their significance, a review of the various tracks, the importance of the mentor/mentee relationship, and keys to successfully planning for promotion and tenure.
