Dr. Scott Holliday, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at The Ohio State University, and Dr. Dan McFarlane, a Med-Peds Hospitalist at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, have developed this module which focuses on optimizing the learning environment. As educators, we spend a great deal of time on the content of our education but often shortchange the learning environment in which it's delivered and the potential impacts thereof. Each faculty member has the responsibility to promote an educational environment in which everyone can succeed. In the high-stress environment of health care, it is easy to be distracted from that responsibility or to let that stress deteriorate the learning climate. This module examines national trends and the trends here at OSU related to the learning climate, provides tools to assess and optimize the learning environment, and reinforces institutional policy and accreditation standards regarding the learning environment.

What You’ll Learn

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of a supportive learning climate in clinical education
  • Recognize how stress and hidden curriculum affect the educational environment
  • Utilize institutional tools and national trends to assess and improve the learning climate
  • Apply strategies that align with accreditation standards and institutional policy

What You’ll Earn

  • 1.0 CME credit
  • A certificate of completion issued by The Ohio State University
