OPTM X313 - Vision Beginnings: A Review of Early Vision Development, Emmetropization, and Examination Strategies for your Youngest Patients

Infants are not born with 20/20 vision. A baby’s visual experience is crucial for developing normal vision, with many changes occurring in the first year of life. This course will cover key visual milestones and their expected timelines, the known and unknown aspects of emmetropization in infants, important risk factors to consider, and practical tips for examining and prescribing for infants and toddlers.

Online, Self-Paced : This course is available fully online with no scheduled class sessions or fixed due dates. You can start coursework at any time and work through it independently at your own pace, within the timeframe designated. Online modules may include readings, lecture videos, assignments, quizzes and more.

Course Completion Requirements
Learners must successfully complete and pass a post activity test. A score of 90% or greater is needed to receive credit for the course. Once the course has been successfully completed, the College of Optometry will upload the course credit to ARBO. Please allow six to eight weeks for the credit to appear on your OE Tracker transcripts.

- Understand normal vision development in infants and when key visual milestones should be met.
- Understand emmetropization and what occurs when the process fails.
- Understand risk factors associated with hyperopia in childhood.
- Develop a clearer understanding of why prescribing for hyperopia in children is not straightforward and learn practical tips for managing hyperopic pediatric patients.
- Learn the risk factors for developing myopia and the treatments currently available for myopia control.
