Domestic violence victims can experience physical violence targeted at the head, neck and face through blows to the head or strangulation, causing concussions and brain injuries. These brain injuries are rarely identified and almost never immediately treated. They can result in short and long-term physical, emotional and cognitive consequences that can impact every area of a survivor’s life — including their ability to successfully access and participate in agency services.

Social workers serve clients experiencing domestic violence every day. This training provides the opportunity to address an invisible barrier to services, safety and well-being. Participants will learn about Ohio’s groundbreaking research on CARE, an evidence-based framework developed by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network and The Ohio State University. CARE includes a focus on accommodations and practical, hands-on, free tools available to raise awareness and address brain injury with survivors, as well as within community partnerships.

What You’ll Learn

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common causes of brain injury resulting from violence.
  • Recognize how strangulation and oxygen deprivation impact the brain and contribute to long-term physical, emotional, and cognitive consequences.
  • Discover how the CARE framework can help community providers educate survivors and their community on brain injury while assessing for and providing accommodations for potential brain injury.

What You’ll Earn

  • This training is approved for 3 CE clock hours for counselors and social workers, as well as substance use counselors in domain TR1 - treatment field related (renewals only) in the state of Ohio.
