This training identifies effective ways to respond to suicidal clients over the phone, including fostering connection, engaging in collaborative problem-solving and implementing safety planning. The session explores how to assess for suicidality and connect callers with reasons for living. The C.A.R.E. framework is provided as a method to ground the conversation in compassion and promote a referral to appropriate resources.

Professor in the Department of Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke

Nicole Stargell, PhD, LPCC, LSC, NCC, BC-TMH, is a professor in the Department of Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She serves as the department chair and is a member of the university's Institutional Review Board. She earned her master’s degree from Youngstown State University in Ohio and her doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (both CACREP-accredited). Stargell is a licensed professional clinical counselor, a licensed school counselor, a board-certified telemental health provider, and a national certified counselor. Her counseling specialties include telecounseling, clinical diagnosis and children and adolescents.

Continuing Education Approvals
The Ohio State University College of Social Work provides approvals for continuing education for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists that are accepted by the state of Ohio Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board.

Certificates & CE Reporting
CE certificates will be available for download in your learner portal within 1 business day after submitting the evaluation survey. Hours for those with Ohio licenses that are submitted with the evaluation survey will be reported to CE Broker every 14 days (twice per month).

⚠️ Note: You may only complete this training once for CE credit. You may revisit the content, but only one certificate will be issued and credit will only be reported to CE Broker one time.
