ATHTR X900 - Acute Sports Injury and Illness Management 2026

This course will focus on the management of acute athletic injuries and illnesses in the setting of immediate sports coverage. Speakers include physicians, sport physical therapists, and athletic trainers to discuss the spectrum of considerations from Emergency Action Planning to managing sports-related life and limb injuries. This course includes pre- and post-course assessments, in person lecture series, and practical labs for optimized practice of hands-on skills concerning concussion management, sports equipment removal, and splinting/stabilization of musculoskeletal injuries.

Hybrid: This course includes both in-person instruction and online components for pre- and post-course work.

This course is projected to take 14.5 hours to complete.
Course Completion Requirements
Successful completion of this course requires a minimum score of 99% and completion of all pre- and post-course assignments and assessments.

What You’ll Learn
- Develop and implement effective Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for acute athletic injuries and illnesses in the setting of immediate sports coverage.
- Recognize and manage life- and limb-threatening conditions in athletes, including cardiac arrest, spinal cord injuries, brachial plexus injuries, and cardiovascular or pulmonary emergencies.
- Demonstrate competency in concussion evaluation and management, incorporating current consensus guidelines and evidence-based return-to-play principles.
- Perform appropriate acute musculoskeletal injury triage, splinting, and stabilization techniques during on-field and sideline care scenarios.
- Apply hands-on emergency skills in simulated laboratory settings, including cervical spine stabilization, sports equipment removal, hemorrhage control, and environmental illness management.
- Differentiate common dermatologic conditions in sport and implement appropriate participation and infection-control decisions.
- Identify and manage environmental and exertional heat illnesses (EHI) using evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies during sports coverage.
- Apply clinical decision-making under time-sensitive sideline conditions, prioritizing athlete safety while balancing return-to-play considerations.
- Demonstrate proficiency in hemorrhage control techniques, including use of tourniquets and “Stop the Bleed” principles.

Canvas will be used for pre- and post-course assignments and assessments, as well as for access to presentation slides. Completion of pre-course assignments and the post-course assessment is required prior to receiving a certificate.
The majority of the course will consist of live, in-person lectures and hands-on lab experiences.
