GERONT X203 - Gerontology - Understanding Younger-Onset Alzheimer's Disease

An estimated 7.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. While most individuals are diagnosed after the age of 65, 4-10% have a form of the disease called Younger Onset Alzheimer's disease (YOAD), also known as Early-Onset Alzheimer’s. This specialized population of older adults has unique needs, as YOAD affects these families differently from those diagnosed with traditional Alzheimer’s. Families coping with YOAD experience familial problems, psychosocial challenges, as well as financial and employment difficulties different from their peers diagnosed with traditional Alzheimer’s disease. We will cover these topics in this Module, and will also look at how these issues will affect families as their loved ones age into late adulthood.
