GERONT X010 - Gerontology - Facing Mortality

Taking care of people at the end of life is a major undertaking. For many, it represents a sacred trust, and therefore is not to be entered into lightly. Before one can safely and competently care for others during this critical period of time in their lives, and in the lives of their families, it is crucial to come to terms with one's own mortality; for in facing it, we are compelled to deliver care that is free as much as possible from our own fearfulness and blind spots. In learning to confront our own apprehensions, we are better able to guide others and their families through what can be an uncertain maze of choices and decisions that can make the difference between a naturally sad experience and a bad experience.
