The purpose of this module is to familiarize you with the unique health care needs of the aging LGBTQIA+ community. It is estimated that by 2030, there will be 2.4 million older adults identifying as LGBTQIA+ in the United States (Statista, 2024). Thus, it is extremely likely that one of your patients or clients will indeed identify as an LGBTQIA+ older adult.

Despite great advances in LGBTQIA+ rights, specific discriminatory practices still exist that create significant barriers to quality health care for this group. Through recognizing the specific needs of this community, care professionals can work with older LGBTQIA+ adults and certain community entities to ensure that aging LGBTQIA+ adults receive the proper support and care to enjoy a healthy senior life. We hope that by the end of this module you will be able to better understand caring for the aging LGBTQIA+ population.
